About
Valerie is Canadian...and British, and Irish (on her mother's side) and has been living in the Netherlands for 12 of the last 12 years. But when she goes 'home' to visit her parents, she goes to the United States.
Her education is just as mixed. A double honours degree in English Literature and Political Science at the University of Toronto led to a career in environmental consulting for a few years, and then to the Ontario College of Art and Design University to study drawing and painting.
As an artist, Valerie has participated in many solo and group shows in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and Germany. Her work is held in private and corporate collections in several countries.
Valerie has written about individual artists for various publications undertaken translation and writing commissions for cultural organisations and museums. She also organises and curates exhibitions. As a curator, most recently of Kunstkijkshop and Eyelevel (and in 2012 of Fresh Art to Go, BTW/btw and The Artery Show), her position is more similar to that of an activist, rather than critic. The social and cultural aspects of making and viewing art, particularly as they relate to buying and living with art, are her particular interest.
Valerie's visual art is characterised by a love of colour and finely-wrought detail. While subject matter has varied from landscapes to natural phenomena, thematically, the ways in which visual memories are recorded and presented as well as how digital technology refines and disorients visual perception and memory are both constant, long-term issues in her work.
